About Sam

You are here

Cheryl-Samantha Owen is a photographer and writer based in Africa. Sam’s visual style combines an artist’s eye with both a scientist’s knowledge and a journalist’s sense of storytelling. Her work takes the viewers on a journey of discovery and stirs their curiosity. More than that, she provides a visual stimulus, which encourages us all to become better custodians of our planet.

Sam works on commission for magazines and news publications as well as corporates and charitable foundations. Her editorial clients include Intelligent Life Magazine - The Economist, BBC Wildlife, Terre Sauvage, Africa Geographic, Getaway, Wild and The Telegraph. Corporate and NGO clients include Investec Asset Management, Abercrombie & Kent, The University of Minnesota Foundation and Greenpeace. Her commissions as a fine art photographer demonstrate her versatility.

Sam is a Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP). Her photographs have been projected at LookBetween, Charlottesville and exhibited in galleries and photo festivals around the world. A recipient of the Helge Hummelvoll Scholarship, she was selected for the Missouri Photo Workshop (MPW66) in 2014.

Born in Kenya, Sam developed a fierce drive to protect the continent’s resources, and decided to train in the biological sciences. Sam holds a First Class MSc in Conservation Biology from the Percy Fitzpatrick Institute, University of Cape Town and a BSc Honours in Environmental Science and Business from Imperial College, London. She has lived in Africa for most of her life, and her work with Fauna and Flora International, Conservation International, Greenpeace and the Save Our Seas Foundation has taken her across the continent and along its oceans and coasts, including expeditions to the remote Aldabra Atoll, Djibouti and the Tana River Delta.
